Holi

For this brief, the goal was to explore and learn about cultural celebrations. I decided to tap into my Indian heritage and look at Holi the spring festival of colour. The holiday celebrates new beginnings, love and family. The most famous part of the festival is when people throw colourful pigments and water at each other dancing and singing in the streets. I decided to make an image that could be used as a two-page spread in a book about India.

I started by creating a mood board exploring different aspects of the festival. I wanted colour to be a big part of the image so getting the vibrancy right was important. India has some beautiful architecture and I thought it would be fun to incorporate it into the final design. For the people, I wanted to represent a more modern India with a mix of traditional and more Westernized clothing. I didn’t want to lose the intricacy of the line work in the pigment clouds so I decided to play a bit with the line art colour so none of the details were lost.
