If Cats Disappeared From the World

This image came into being after I started reading the short story of the same name by Japanese author Genki Kawamura. I liked the idea of a mundane image with the cat having almost been cut out. I took a lot of inspiration from classic Ukiyo-e prints and wanted to emulate the feel of a woodblock print.

I wanted the design of the room to reflect the Japanese setting to the audience. I find something really beautiful about the simplicity and straight lines of Japanese architecture. I also wanted the title text to feel like it’s disappearing from the image much like the little cat in the foreground.
